Family Week 2 at Ogontz July 30 - August 6, 2005 Program Director: Staff: * Advisors, plus: |
Program Description: [Back to Top]
Look up our Family Programs for some general information; here is more detail about this particular program and staff.
Every single sense is tickled at Ogontz! The camp rolls down the grassy hillsides of its northern New Hampshire setting and at each Family Week, there rolls along also such vibrancy, new learning and plain good fun. Surprises and treats and excellent programming join with the tumbling, natural beauty and grace.
Green, green is the Ogontz world. The trees are tall and the cabin window box flowers topple the edges. Fragrant and wholesome is the air -- especially near the Ogontz bakery. Beckoning and bright are the sounds that echo through camp and across the lake -- Alpenhorns, fiddles, stories, harmonies we sing so clear, and, yes, bombardes too! Pungent and warm and always fresh are the tastes of scratch cooking and homemade meals. Cool and clear are the waters of the lake and streams ... and, usually, the stars at night. And aliveness and alertness are the feelings of Ogontz when the energies of families and friends together make music, make dance and tickle the community out of these powerful sensations.
Into this wonder comes the Family Week 2 staff. Young! Raised in the tradition! Fresh! Well-rounded. A bounty of talents. A blessing of mirthful and jolly personalities. Secure skills and teaching abilities. Adventurous and always curious teachers and musicians. Folks who want to work together.
Classes for everyone -- sometimes in specific age groups, sometimes together. Mountain squares. Swing! Contras. Ritual dances. Ceilidh dancing. Balanced and beckoning chestnuts. Perfect English. Playful English. Crafts to challenge. Songs, songs, songs. Things to make and take. Stories, always. Family bands. Masks. Costumes. Swimming.
And then there are the celebrations -- special parties, festive dancing, a parade! A talent show, gathering times, mysterious surprises, working together, good friends in a good place.
Ogontz Family Week 2 will tickle and pamper your senses and help you to build a community. Hurrah for a joyful week together! -- Merle Davis, Program Director
David Cantieni: Such elegance, that David! With cleverness and style, this flute-whistle-sax - and more! -- player leads us into dancing and playing. He loves it so. And because he shows that, we love it all the more! Also, think Wild Asparagus -- that's David, too!
jubal Creech: Percussion teacher, composer, team player with events ranging from Shakespeare to the Applejuice Orchestra. Loves the world.
Andy Davis: The thing about Andy is -- there are so many things about Andy! All-kinds-of-dancer, teacher, singer, musician, organizer, friend. He's the master of family dance time and he gives of himself so freely. He always makes us feel right.
Donald Davis: Donald is happiest when his stories remind you of your stories. He'll bring all these Davis relatives and classmates to camp with him! Watch out! You might find some of your relatives and friends in memory popping up at camp when you least expect them.
Merle Davis: Ocracoke Island's school is small and inviting ... teaching there for years, Merle has taught lots of little people and right on up through high school. What a rich background for flexible camp living!
Robin Davis: She can bake anything, make anything and be the best teacher ever known. Robin is thorough and careful. You'll delight in her work and her talents ... you'll really delight in her smile.
Daron Douglas: Daron weaves -- yarns into rugs, notes into fiddle tunes, "just words" into ballads, ideas into possibilities, new fiddle students into proud musicians, the "way it used to be" into a gentle walk with her grandmother, strangers into friends.
Brad Foster: Can a really tall man be really graceful? Can a Californian by birth become an English dance teacher? Can the CDSS Executive Director be at Family Camp? You just wait until you meet Brad!
Nils Fredland: Have you heard the talk? Fresh and new to Family Camps, Nils brings his contra calling to Ogontz with many enthusiastic ideas and many ecstatic reviews. Can't wait!
Jonathan Jensen: Mr. Music. Jonathan's piano playing and ocarina collection are now famous ... his song-writing and melody compositions are raising their hands to make an even bigger name for him.
Owen Morrison: "That fellow was raised right" -- right in the middle of the traditional dance and music world. You will not believe his abilities on mandolin, guitar and banjo as well as teaching dance classes. Owen was born knowing what makes Family Week work!
Naomi Morse: All of her life Naomi has figured out how to have music and fiddle be her life. Aren't we glad she's a part of this Family Week? Naomi has had lots of Family Week experience, but it's her first time at Ogontz.
Ann Percival: It all started at Girl Scout Camp for Ann. That was when she discovered that she loved singing. She's been true to that. Now, she helps us love singing ... and love life! She's full of surprises.
Kari Smith: Stepping out with Doctor Kari Smith -- what a prescription for fun and learning. Kari's English and Anglo-American seasonal display dancing will bring spice and good medicine.
Paul Eric Smith: Old English, New English, Partying English and the music to match. Paul Eric will coax the dance an playfulness from our feet and souls (soles?). What fun to have the Smiths with their new daughter, Claire, at Family Week.
