The spirit and good humor of a Newfoundland house party; the joy and energy of jug band music; traditions from Native America; song makers and singers of New England and the Maritimes; choral singing from the U.S. and around the world; some of the best dulcimer playing to be found anywhere; group singing with the founders of the Golden Ring; great dancing -- all this and more is waiting for you at Pinewoods Folk Music Week 2002.
Everyone is welcome to take a place in a community where the love of traditional song and dance unites Pinewoods newcomers and old-timers. There is a definite emphasis this year on traditions of the Northeast (New England and the Atlantic Provinces). Expand your repertoire and learn about traditional singers and songs from Sandy Ives, scholar, raconteur, and dean of folklorists of Northeastern North America. Get to know Anita Best, Tobias Pearson, and Baxter Wareham, wonderful singers from Newfoundland, who carry on a unique tradition of song and story. Learn songs, dances, and other Native American traditions from Marge Bruchac a storyteller and tradition-bearer of Missisquoi Abenaki heritage.
Sandy and Caroline Paton bring a wealth of song from their unique history of performing, recording, and collecting the best in traditional and contemporary music. Tom Spiers of Aberdeen brings a wealth of song and a deep knowledge of Scottish Traditional Music. Andy Cohen is one of the best guitar players going and a font of knowledge about the blues and American traditional music in general. Larkin Bryant is one of the most respected Appalachian dulcimer players and teachers alive.
Seth Houston will lead choral singing of American and international music. Seth is an expert at getting people to make beautiful music together and his chorus will not require music-reading skills.
Caller Becky Hill is known for her skill at calling exciting dances for all levels of dancers and she is the author of some of the best new contra dances written.
Music for dancing will be provided by Wild Goose Nation, Craig Edwards, Dirck Westervelt, and Mike Fischman. A trio known throughout New England not only for playing contras and squares, but also for Cajun and swing . Craig is also a member of the Mystic Seaport Shanty Crew and directs the annual Mystic Sea Music Festival.
Anita Best is one of Newfoundland's finest traditional singers and has spent a lifetime exploring, cataloguing and celebrating the rural Newfoundland lifestyle and culture. Born on Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay (since abandoned under the resettlement program), her recordings include Crosshanded, a capella renditions of 12 traditional Newfoundland songs. Marge Bruchac is a historical interpreter and traditional storyteller, dancer and singer of Missisquoi Abenaki Indian ancestry. She has made two recordings and has appeared widely on her own and as a member of the Dawnland Singers and the W'Abenaki Dancers. Personal Webpage
Larkin Bryant is a superb Appalachian dulcimer player. Larkin's Dulcimer Book, now in its 19th printing, has become the bible for beginners on that instrument and her latest recording, Lark in the Twilight, highlights her exquisite musicianship.
Andy Cohen, "the guru of American blues," is an exuberant singer, a virtuoso guitar player, and piano and dulceola pounder who has the rare ability to absorb the very substance and character of the older players. His most recent CD is The Sacred Songs of Rev. Gary Davis.
Becky Hill, the author of two books of original contra dances, Twirling Dervish and Twirling Dervish Returns, is an internationally-popular caller, choreographer and dance teacher. Becky will call contras and squares and might even teach some swing dancing. Personal Webpage
Seth Houston, choral director, composer and dance musician, will lead captivating multi-part songs from America and around the world, including music from Croatia, Bulgaria, Georgia and South Africa as well as shape note, Appalachian and gospel music. He may also teach some contemporary music rooted in traditional styles composed by himself and Malcolm Dalglish.
Edward "Sandy" Ives is an eminent folklorist and scholar of oral history, folk songs and ballads. His work is particularly notable for the warmth and humanity of his relation to his sources. He has recorded an album for Folkways and is the author of folk-song collections from Maine, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and studies on the song-making traditions of the Maine and the Maritimes. Sandy and Caroline Paton are the co-founders of Folk Legacy recordings. Sandy is the inspiration for and founding member of the Golden Ring and a noted folk-song collector and singer. They will lead a workshop of sing-along songs. Personal Webpage
Tobias Pearson is a traditional singer from Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. With his brother Gerald, he is a fine house party singer and veteran of many festivals.
Tom Spiers, a singer and fiddler from Aberdeen, Scotland, is notable for singing to self-accompaniment on the fiddle. He has recorded on his own and with the influential group, The Gaugers. His "style... is firmly rooted in the Northeast of Scotland ... with plenty of double stopping and rhythmic drive."
Dick Swain, Program Director, has an abiding interest in traditional folk song and an unusual repertoire of songs from the Great Lakes, Maine and the Atlantic Provinces.
Baxter Wareham, Newfoundland accordion player, singer and raconteur, has toured in Canada and Europe, playing at many folk festivals. His recording Buffet Double is a collection of music coming from his home in Placentia Bay.
Wild Goose Nation is a remarkably versatile band with a repertoire that ranges from Appalachian to Zydeco, from contras to swing. Craig Edwards (fiddle, guitar, banjo, accordion), Mike Fischman (mandolin, banjo, guitar, bass) and Dirck Westervelt (guitar, banjo, bass) have performed widely as a group and have a number of recordings as solo performers and sidemen. Craig is a member of the Mystic Seaport shanty crew and has a deep interest in traditional American instrumental music and song and in exploring social and cultural history through music.

Song Makers of the Northeast -- Sandy Ives
Songs of Larry Gorman, Lawrence Doyle, Joe Scott, and others which passed into the oral tradition. Hear the the songs and learn about the singers from whom Sandy collected them.
Abenaki Traditions -- Marge Bruchac
Songs, dances, and stories of the "First People of Vermont." Marge is of Missisquoi Abenaki ancestry., and she will combine her skills as a folklorist, dancer, and singer with her knowledge and respect for her own heritage to present a wonderful introduction to Abenaki traditions.
Beginning Dulcimer -- Larkin Bryant
Learn basic skills from one of the most respected dulcimer teachers going. Larkin is a wonderful teacher and the author of Larkin's Dulcimer Book.
Songs, Stories, Accordion -- Baxter Wareham
Songs, stories, recitations, and button accordion from a master of Newfoundland traditions.
Songs With a Theme -- Tom Spiers
Songs of War, Sea Songs (not Shanties), Love and Marriage, Tradition Bearers, Rural Life, Ballads, and more. Mostly, but not all, songs from Scotland. Tom is one of the few singers to accompany himself on the fiddle. Find out how he does it.
Period II: 2:00 - 3:00
Newfoundland House Party -- Anita Best, Baxter Wareham, Tobias Pearson
A get-together of four of the best Newfoundland singers and musicians. Take part in the fun.
Dance -- Becky Hill & Wild Goose Nation
Learn some new dances, practice the one's you know. Contras, squares, swing, waltz, maybe some Cajun.
Chorus Songs -- Sandy & Caroline Paton
Join in with the founders of the Golden Ring. Sandy and Caroline have an immense repertoire of great chorus songs, and they really love getting everyone to sing along.
Guitar -- Andy Cohen
Improve your guitar playing with lessons from one of the best blues and ragtime guitarists. Andy not only is a great player, he also has carefully studied the techniques and physiology of blues guitar playing.
Native American New England -- Marge Bruchac
An introduction to the culture and traditions native to New England. Marge is of Missisquoi Abenaki ancestry and serves as a Native American consultant to Old Sturbridge Village, the Peabody Andover Museum and the Wampanoag Indian Program at Plimoth Plantation.
Period III: 3:15 - 4:15
Great Singers: Wilmot MacDonald and Others -- Sandy Ives
Hear and learn about the best singers from the Northeast, Wilmot MacDonald and Jim Brown of New Brunswick, Joe Walsh of Prince Edward Island and others. Wilmot MacDonald, long the backbone of the Miramichi Festival had an amazing store of stories, ballads, and songs (including "blaggard" (i.e. obscene) songs).
Jug Band -- Andy Cohen
Bring your guitar, banjo, jug, kazoo, washboard, or whatever and join in.
Int/Adv Dulcimer -- Larkin Bryant
Improve your playing. Larkin is an absolute master at creating interesting arrangements of familiar tunes. Learn something about how she does it.
More Songs with a Theme -- Tom Spiers
Deceit, Supernatural, Food and Drink, Separation, Poverty, and more. Tom will give Scottish examples of songs from these themes and encourage feedback on American versions of the same song - or totally different songs within the theme.
Song Tradition of Merasheen -- Tobias Pearson
The brothers present songs from a unique Newfoundland outport tradition - Merasheen Island in Placentia Bay.
Period IV: 4:30 - 5:30
Traditional Choral Singing From America and Around the World -- Seth Houston.
Appalachian, gospel, shape-note, Balkan, and other international choral music. No need to know how to read music. Learn the parts by ear.
Songs & Ballads -- Anita Best
Traditional and contemporary music from one of Newfoundland's best and most thoughtful singers.
Fiddle -- Craig Edwards
Improve your fiddling with a wonderful musician and an experienced teacher. Craig plays idiomatic old-time, cajun, Irish, and contra dance fiddle. Intermediate to advanced.
Mandolin -- Mike Fischman
Mike is an excellent teacher and a sought-after sideman who plays with several bands in different style including, swing, cajun, bluegrass, contra dance and more. Intermediate to advanced.
Piano -- Dirck Westervelt
Piano as an accompanying instrument, including dance band piano. Dirck plays contra dance, blues, jazz and more. Bring a keyboard if possible. Intermediate to advanced. Basic knowledge of harmony and theory required.
