Program Description: [Back to Top]

Look up our Adult Programs for some general information; here is more detail about this particular program and staff.

English Dance Week at Pinewoods provides the opportunity to study and enjoy the variety of English dance and music traditions with the finest teachers, scholars and musicians anywhere. Master teachers and leaders bring their expertise to the program, offering everyone from the novice to the seasoned dancer, from the aspiring to the experienced leader opportunities to be challenged, to gather information, and to participate in a vibrant community that shares the joy of traditional dance, music and song.

New to the program this year will be an All Camp Gathering, hosted by John Roberts and Tony Barrand. This renowned duo will bring to our camp community their inspired repartee, songs, music and stories, while coordinating the rich array of performances, presentations and fun activities our incredible staff has to offer. Also new this year will be a class in Old Time Ballroom Dancing offered by our special guest from England, Alex Woodcock. This veteran ballroom dance teacher will teach traditional sequence dances for sets of four and six, and couple dances... lancers, quadrilles, waltzes, tangos, two steps, country dances and more!

We are very pleased to welcome back to English Week the wonderful Philippe Callens, from Belgium, who will lead the strong country dance portion of the program. The display dance program features classes in repertoire, inventions and history. Inventions classes (Tony's Cotswold, Kari's Northwest and Garland classes) will be both inspiring to seasoned dance leaders eager to explore choreographing, and useful and informative for dancers seeking basic skills and knowledge. With the exception of an advanced clog class, all display dance classes are open to interested dancers of varied experience levels.

This year's program will once again offer the combined Open Mic/English Country Dance Band session that was so successful last year. Aspiring and experienced callers can hone their skills under the expert leadership of Brad Foster, while camper musicians collaborate in an English Country Dance Band under the tutelage of musician-extraordinaire Barbara Greenberg.

We have an incredible community of singers and instrumentalists on staff this year. Group singing, a lengthy afternoon tea time (for further collaboration with staff, practicing, planning shenanigans, singing, swimming, or just tea and rest!), evening dance parties, an English Pub/Ceilidh Dance evening, and after-dance activities make for a full and varied program. Our community will be further enlivened by the English Dance Musicians Course, taught by Jacqueline Schwab and offered to a preregistered group of musicians.

Staff: [Back to Top]
Margaret Dale Barrand, founding member of Marlboro Morris and Sword and The New Dancing Marleys, is a long-time dancer of morris, Northwest, longsword and clog dance traditions. She is an astonishingly beautiful dancer, a truly gifted teacher and a fine pipe and tabor player. Margaret Dale has frequently been on staff at Pinewoods and at other dance camps and workshops across the country playing music, and we welcome her this year as a dance teacher too. She also happens to be a wonderful singer!

Tony Barrand, has long been recognized as the preeminent authority on the various traditions of English and Anglo-American display dance. Founding father of Marlboro Morris and Sword, Green Mountain Mummers, the Morris Dancers (a Northwest team based in Brattleboro), and The New Dancing Marleys, he has authored and edited numerous publications on morris, sword and clog dancing including his Six Fools and a Dancer and Ivor Allsop's Longsword Dances. Together with his long-time singing partner, John Roberts, and with his seasonal production Nowell Sing We Clear, Tony has made numerous recordings and tours the country performing traditional song. He teaches folklore and folklife at Boston University.

Daniel Beerbohm, member of Hold the Mustard, A Joyful Noise and Reunion, joins us on clarinet, flute and pennywhistle. He spices his English and contradance playing from a rich background of swing, Klezmer and classical music.

Philippe Callens is internationally known as a dance leader of English country dancing and other styles. A native of Belgium, he has been active in the dance community for more than 20 years, teaching, publishing, calling and composing, and has called far and wide in the U.S. for the last ten years. He has earned a reputation as a leader of English country dancing who easily combines high quality dancing with enjoyment. His visits to the U.S. have led to numerous publications and recordings, including Continental Capers (1999), a collection of English country dances, a forthcoming second volume of English country dances, and a CD recording in collaboration with the bands A Joyful Noise and Hold the Mustard.

Doug Creighton, of the English country dance band Pleasures of the Town, is an extraordinary musician on the button accordion, flute and concertina... and he is a fine singer to boot! He brings a wealth of experience as dancer and musician for numerous display dance teams as well as country dance, and his rhythmically precise style and finesse make him an outstanding accompanist for clog dance. He also happens to be the guru of The Button Box.

Daron Douglas plays English country dance fiddle with a background of a traditional Appalachian upbringing. She has played with the Knoxville Early Music Project, the Hominy Mamas and the contra dance band Misbehavin' (known for their original waltzes CD, Just Over the Mountain). Daron is much in demand for CDSS dance camps and at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C. She now lives and plays music in New Orleans. She thanks her grandmother for the gift of her ballads and we do too (and so did Cecil Sharp!), for Daron is an exquisitely wonderful singer of traditional song.

Barbara Finney has a dance background which includes a variety of styles, including Renaissance and Baroque court dance. An acclaimed dance leader, she teaches at the weekly dance of the CDS, Boston Centre and over the last 12 years has called at many other dances in the eastern U.S. and Canada and at Pinewoods.

Brad Foster loves to dance and loves to share the joy of dance with others. He has been teaching for over 25 years. Brad has taught for over 17 years at Pinewoods and at Buffalo Gap, Mendocino, Berea, Brasstown, Lady of the Lake, Augusta, as well as at weekends, festivals and dances across the U.S., Canada and in Europe. He is the Executive and Artistic Director of CDSS and one of the founders of The Bay Area Country Dance Society and their Mendocino dance weeks.

Barbara Greenberg plays fiddle with Hold the Mustard, A Joyful Noise, A Band Named Bob and Reunion. She's much in demand at dance camps across the country as a musician and as a leader of fiddle or band workshops. When she's not in front of the microphone, she's preparing the next wave of classical and folk musicians as a Suzuki violin teacher.

Jonathan Jensen is an inspired pianist in a wealth of musical styles from English country and contra to ragtime and jazz. Jon is a composer of brilliant English country dance tunes and waltzes, performer with Reunion, and bassist with the Baltimore Symphony. He is further renowned at camp for having one of the largest collections of ocarinas anywhere, and for regaling us with unbelievable performances on them!

John Roberts, currently from Schenectady, NY, is a music engraver, legal alien, singer and musician. He is renowned as a singer of English traditional song and a master on the concertina. He performs regularly with his long-time singing partner Tony Barrand, with Nowell Sing We Clear, and has a solo career singing (and playing) the full range of the English tradition. John is also one of the finest of morris musicians anywhere on the planet.

Meg Ryan is an outstanding performer and teacher of both English and Anglo-American clog dance styles. A member of The New Dancing Marleys, Meg has performed in England, Canada and the U.S. She has studied under some of the masters of the traditions of English clog, including Pat Tracey and Alex Woodcock.

Jacqueline Schwab is widely known as the pianist on nine Ken Burns's PBS documentaries (including The Civil War, Baseball and his newest one on Mark Twain) and on recordings with Bare Necessities, singer Jean Redpath, fiddlers Alasdair Fraser and Laura Risk and others. Jacqueline has two recent solo recordings. She has performed for former President Clinton at the White House and at the Smithsonian. A longtime dancer, Jacqueline teaches English dance workshops with Bare Necessities around the country.

Kari Smith has been teaching the range of English and Anglo-American display dance traditions since 1985. She is foreman and a founding member of Guiding Star Clog Morris in Greenfield, MA. She teaches clog and seasonal display dancing throughout the country at dance camps, workshops and in elementary schools. She is currently completing a doctorate in Dance History and Folklore at Boston University.

Kathy Talvitie, a member of Hold the Mustard, A Joyful Noise and Raise the Roof, is known for her sensitive and creative music. She is very active in the Delaware Valley dance community as a player, dancer and organizer. Kathy will play piano and rhythm guitar for English country dance.

Alex Woodcock, of West Sussex, England, has been clog dancing since 1932 and teaching ballroom dance since 1947. As a youngster he was taught to clog dance by Bert May, son of a well-known North Eastern clog dancer, and went on to develop his repertoire as a performer. In the mid-1940s he performed with the Royal Air Force Concert-Party, entertaining at RAF camps in England and Germany. He teaches clog regularly at festivals and workshops in England. He obtained his Teachers Certificate in Old Time Ballroom Dancing in 1947 and has been teaching ever since. He is a delightful and captivating performer, a highly skilled dancer and teacher and a lovely person!

English Country Dance

English Country: The Pleasures of Terpsichore -- Philippe Callens/Jonathan Jensen, Barbara Greenberg
A class for all that will focus on the stylistic elements of dancing. Forget about the patterns, the geometry, the dances, and let's look at English country dance from a dancing point of view. This class will offer all kinds of "different ways of doing things". Dancers should be ready to strive for Philippe's vision and willing to accept personal pointers.

English Country: Not All My Own Work -- Philippe Callens/Kathy Talvitie, Barbara Greenberg, Daniel Beerbohm
An advanced class of contemporary English country dances, several written by Philippe, but with some by other choreographers from his side of the big pond, for experienced dancers only.

English Country: Forgotten Treasures -- Philippe Callens/Kathy Talvitie, Daron Douglas

English Country for All -- Brad Foster/Jonathan Jensen, Daron Douglas
The eloquent Brad Foster will encourage inexperienced and intermediate country dancers.

English Country: Old Time Ballroom -- Alex Woodcock/Jonathan Jensen, Daniel Beerbohm
Alex Woodcock brings over 50 years experience teaching old-style ballroom dance to our program this year. This class will cover set and couple dances from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Country dancers will certainly enjoy this specialty, as will display dancers! Display dance leaders interested in choreographing dances should find the ballroom set dances an inspiration!

Open Mic/ECD Band -- MC: Brad Foster & Barbara Greenberg
Brad will provide support and feedback to aspiring and experienced callers. Barbara Greenberg will inspire and tutor instrumental skills in the English Country Dance Band.

Singing -- John Roberts
The inimitable and inestimable John Roberts will lead a sing each afternoon during tea time. Chorus songs, pub songs, ballads, carols, seasonal songs, songs of the sea, songs of lost love, songs of war-time and battles, songs of the supernatural, songs of the people.... Come to sing or come to listen!
