Program Description: [Back to Top]
This is an intensive course for English dance leaders who wish to
develop or improve their teaching and dancing skills. The program
will include an understanding of the caller's role as well as a
demanding, detailed look at your own dancing. You should have some
experience at calling. In the course of the day, there will be a great deal of
practice in calling, with detailed and constructive feedback; practice
working with musicians; exposure to the wonderful breadth of the English
country dance repertoire; training in a method for giving
nonthreatening, constructive feedback (you can teach this to your dancers at
home!); instruction in effective use of a microphone; constructive feedback
on the way you use your voice; and discussion of programming,
including what distinguishes a good program from a bad one. You will learn
how to teach dance style, how to teach simple dances very briefly and
complex dances simply and efficiently. You will also learn how to teach
the rant and hornpipe steps.
Bruce Hamilton has designed this program (held concurrently with English Dance Week at Pinewoods) and is the principal teacher. He has been an English and Scottish country dancer for over 30 years, and teacher for over 25. He has taught numerous calling workshops, including intensive sessions at weekends as well as weekly classes. He is an extremely gifted teacher of teachers, able to look beyond the obvious, and has spent a great deal of his own efforts over the last fifteen years in the development of teaching methods and curriculum for the training of teachers.
This course includes three special classes plus a fourth class and the extra-curricular activities offered by English Dance Week at Pinewoods. There will be two (one morning, one afternoon) classes with Bruce Hamilton concentrating on the role of the caller. Sue Salmons's experienced and Brad Foster's beginning/intermediate country dance classes are also part of the program. Each will have a focus on movement and style; choose the class level appropriate for your skill. During the last period of the day, participants are free to choose among any of the classes offered. Please check the description of English Dance Week at Pinewoods for details on the program and staff.
