Campers' Week at Pinewoods August 15 - 22, 1998 Program Director: Staff: *Advisors plus: |
Program Description: [Back to Top]
Serendipity is one of the hallmarks of Campers' Week. To our experienced and gifted (and small)
teaching staff are added the many talents and interests of campers, young and old. From this shared leadership,
our schedule of classes, dances, gatherings and other activities takes shape.
During Campers' Week, you're never completely sure what will happen next -- and that's part of the fun. (Of course, meals and bedtimes follow a regular schedule!) While the core is a solid program of traditional dance and song, camperled offerings ensure a richlyvaried menu of choices. To your schedule of social and ritual dance classes, you may add a session or two of string games, Sacred Harp singing, selfdefense or swing dance. There's almost always a craft activity going on during the day, and don't forget to leave time for a swim in the pond, a walk in the woods or a leisurely chat on the camphouse porch. Campers' Week folk play hard, but they leave space in their schedules for just hanging out as well. Children ages 4 12 will attend two classes a day especially for their age group; many other activities are multi-generational.
No time is more magical than the evening, when the strains of the Pied Piper lead the younger children off to their cabins for bedtime, and dancers and musicians begin to gather under the lights in the C# dance pavilion. Roving babysitters check on the children during the evening, allowing parents to enjoy the dance.
Each Campers' Week is filled with cherished traditions -- the Ball, skit night, the allcamp morris tour, wish boats -- and the pleasure of being with old friends and making new ones.
If you come to Campers' Week, be prepared to bring something you love -- an instrument, a song, dance, story, craft, game or special interest -- and share it with the rest of us.

Andy Davis
Andy is community dance caller and musician, an accomplished
accordion player and fine traditional singer. His commitment to
teaching traditional dance and music to young folks has taken Andy to
faroff places, including two tours to Russia. This year he'll be back to
work his magic with the children's classes. He'll also lead singing for
the rest of us: look for some rousing shape note hymn sessions on
the acousticallyperfect Camphouse porch!
Jody Kruskal
Jody returns to delight the four and five year olds (and everyone
else) with his special combination of humor and skill. In addition, Jody
will be our "concertmaster" for the nightly dances. A foremost exponent
of the Angloconcertina and member of several contra dance bands,
Jody also has a fondness for creating and collecting homemade instruments.
Bill Smith
Bill proves the rule that Campers' Week staff are amazingly
versatile; he's a banjo, mandolin and guitar player, as well as a treasury of
traditional songs and music, he's also an expert woodworker and
teacher. Bill will be our maven of class musicians, coordinating talent to
accompany classes for young and old.
ErnaLynne Bogue
Erna-Lynne has taught and led English and contra dance
programs from coast to coast, gaining a reputation for her skill in working
with all levels and for her sense of fun. She established a dance group
in Ann Arbor, MI, and has been active in CDSS for many years both
as teacher and board member. ErnaLynne will teach an English
country class and call during the evening dances, as well as lead some
sessions on dance choreography and composition.
Sarah Gregory Smith
Back by popular demand, Sarah will lead the morning contra
dance class and coordinate a stellar lineup of staff and camper callers in
the evening. Listen for her lively bass playing and soulful singing --
Sarah's wideranging repertoire goes from Appalachian to South African
to Fifties favorites and Blues.
Jan Elliott
An avid morris and sword dancer, Jan is founder of the Ha'penny
Morris team. Equally at home with English concertina and Baroque
recorders, Jan performs with both early music consorts and contra
bands. She teaches music and dance in Woods Hole, MA. She will
teach children's classes.
David Smukler
David's family has grown up at Campers' Week and we're
delighted he'll be sharing his many talents with us. David dances and plays
with a Border morris team in upstate New York, leads a children's
morris side and is active as a square and contra dance caller. He's also
gained recognition as a gifted teacher and teachertrainer in the public
schools. David will teach children's classes.
Steve Roderick
Steve is foreman of the Pinewoods Morris Men and dances with
Orion Longsword. He has performed with the National Mime Theater
and Mandala Folk Dance Ensemble. In his spare time, Steve leads a
children's morris team and teaches high school biology! He'll be
coordinating the teen class and teaching longsword.
