CDSS Outreach Funds — Helping Others Make Things Happen

The CDSS Outreach Funds Program has now completed its sixth year (see list of recent recipients). In the following map, each pin represents an individual or organization that has been offered CDSS outreach funding to date— in all about 225 music, dance and song communities throughout the U.S. and Canada! CDSS Outreach Funding has been offered to the following events and projects most recently:

FEBRUARY 2014

18th-19th Century New England Contra Dancing Project - dance events for learning to teach Chestnuts from the early-mid 1800s and keep them vital at current dances (RI)

Third Annual Family Barn Dance - support for this youth and family-oriented event (WV)

The Music Will Tell You What to Dance - workshop to strengthen ECD skills and build wider dance community (NY)

Janie's Jumpstart Weekend Music/Caller Camp - immersion weekend in residential setting to learn from master musicians and callers in small classes (GA)

Maine Folque Co-op Youth Dance Initiative - planning grant to design workshops to introduce local youth to traditional New England and French Canadian social dance; ending with community performance (ME)

Contradance in Paris - event to bring contra dance to Paris (FR)

Legacy of Holyoke's Music, People, and Place - mentorship sessions for musicians to prepare for 2 performances; based on research about music, dance, and song in Holyoke, MA from 1800-1950 (MA)

Teen Musicianship Workshop - training for group of teens preparing to play for monthly barn dance (PA)

New London Assembly - week-long program including English country dancing classes with historical perspective (CT)

OCTOBER 2013    

Eleanor Roosevelt Community Dance - starter dances to inspire young people & families to dance (CA)

Dare to Be Square Tennessee - intensive weekend for training southern square dance callers (TN)

Coaching Grant – training sessions for Dragonfly, a newly-formed teen contra band (MA/VT)

Freedom Middle School Outreach - contra dance instruction for over 600 middle school students in conjunction with dance weekend (FL)

Travel Grant - to help budding caller from KY attend Youth Dance Weekend in VT

Wild Rose Garland Legacy Project - publish booklet/CD of dances collected by garland team over 18 years; to be offered in CDSS store (OR)

Second Sunday Square Dance – traditional square dance series to build community of young dancers (MA)

Free Contra Dance for Beginners – free admission contra event geared towards beginners, paired with experienced dancers; co-sponsored by CD*NY & CDSS (NY)

Contra Dance at the University of Florida - on-campus dance to build interest in contra dancing among students & wider community (FL)

Youth Traditional Song Weekend - youth-focused (not youth-exclusive) weekend of participatory traditional singing including leadership training (MA)

Sun Assembly Spring Dance Weekend - English country and contra dance weekend with new aspect of including workshops for callers of both genres (NC)

Dancing Between the Lines - Midwest leadership conference for callers and dance organizers (OH)

All Contra, All Day, the Right Way - contra workshop for dancers of all levels for building skill and community (BC)

Contra Callers' Workshops - series of mentorship workshops for new callers with opportunities to call at local dances (NM)

Open Contra Dance Band Practice/Workshops - several workshops for musicians leading up to playing for final dance (RI)

2nd Annual Dare to Be Square - weekend of square dancing and calling workshops (VA)

Impropriety Weekend - English country dance and music workshops in 3 cities in Bay area (CA)

World on a String Day - cross-cultural workshops to introduce young classical music students to the wide world of traditional music (DC) - see photo at left

Wallowa Fiddle Tunes Camp - adding contra dance to existing week-long music camp for families (OR) 

Youth Traditional Song Weekend - youth-focused (not youth-exclusive) participatory singing event including leadership training (MA)

Fall Has Sprung - backing to help annual contra festival increase youth attendance by offering sliding scale to dancers 30 and under (CA)

Swan's Island Community Dance - new contra dance to revive dancing on remote island (ME) - see photo at left

Mountain Dance Trail - revitalizing dances in 10 communities throughout West Virginia (WV)

Jim Thorpe Country Dance Series - start-up funding for new monthly contra/square dance (PA)


Scholarships to non-CDSS Programs

Festival of American Fiddle Tunes - scholarship to attend week-long festival to participate in fiddle, piano and calling workshops (WA)

Cumberland Dance Week - scholarship to attend callers workshop at music and dance week including contras, English country dancing, rapper, etc. (KY)

BACDS American Week - matching youth scholarships for dance week including contras and squares, couple dancing, music workshops, etc. (CA)
