English & American Dance & Music

This is NOT your ordinary music and dance week. Well, at first glance, it might look like it is. We will certainly enjoy the return of some of our all-time favorite musicians and dance leaders: Steve Hickman, John Devine, Dave Wiesler, Naomi Morse, Ralph Gordon, DeLaura Padovan, Brad Sayler, Leslie Jeanne Devine Milbourne, Kappy Laning, and Robert Mills. Wow, right? Yeah, they have this Best.Week.Ever thing figured out down to a science, they've been making CDSS Camps FUN, educational, inclusive, and memorable experiences for ALL for some time now.

We are also thrilled to welcome Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand back to Camp. And Mama Bear, Kim Yerton, is joining them this year, so we have The Great Bear Trio, full tilt and full of boogie, playing their wildly innovative yet firmly-rooted-in-tradition brand of dance music. Fisher's Hornpipe morphs into Usher and back to a Bob McQuillen tune with a little Katy Perry thrown in for good measure.

At CDSS Timber Ridge we take great care to meld Adult and Family Weeks, American and English Music and Dance, English Ritual Dance and Appalachian Clogging, and Visual Arts and Singing into an intergenerational cross-genre-y hot mess for a truly stunning week. Our cauldron of tradition and transformation seethes and bubbles over with creativity, synthesis, and passion as all become involved and contribute to the mix. The culture of appreciation, participation, and perpetuation of the music and dance and singing and storytelling that we all love is simply contagious! The result is a unique and dynamic program with brilliant options for kids, teens, young adults, and adults.

New to Timber Ridge, but not new to delighting dancers the world over, Lisa Greenleaf (watch video) will lead our American Dance portion of the week. Lisa always has new and sometimes hilarious tricks up her sleeve, and budding dance leaders will have the opportunity to benefit from her sage advice at the daily DIY Dance Party. Eric Maring our "Monster Musician for the Youngsters" will inspire and uplift our children and he (with Ralph Gordon) will also lead the Community Dance Band as they rock the Sasha and all our Family dance faves.

We are particularly excited to present a Teen Class called "Pass It On" featuring the talents of four dynamic, enthusiastic, and accomplished young women: Mutli-instrumentalist, singer, flatfooter Anna Roberts-Gevalt (video), amazing singer and banjo player Elizabeth LaPrelle (video), percussive dancer and Square Dance preservationist Becky Hill (video), and Morris Dancer and Youth Dance Weekend organizer Sarah Pilzer (video).

What is exceptional about all four of these "Pass It On" leaders is their deep respect for and intimate knowledge of the traditions they represent. What sets them apart is that they are LIVING "keeping the traditions alive". The innovative methods they use to pass these traditions on, making them relevant and irresistibly exciting for all ages and abilities, is their hallmark and their great strength. They are inspired and inspiring proponents of music, song, dance, and storytelling, and they are experts in the HOW and WHY we should keep these traditions alive and help them flourish.

Just a tantalizing example of Anna and Elizabeth's work, taking crankies to the next level, seriously pushing the crankie envelope: video

In addition to the scheduled classes, there are gatherings where stories, songs, talents, and much laughter are shared. Somehow there is also time during the day for nature walks, swimming, canoeing, and hanging out with friends. Adults and teenagers enjoy marvelous evening dances and fabulous after-dance activities - pub singing, dance parties, cabaret, and honky-tonkin’. The last full day of camp is show and tell time, and we celebrate our wonderful week together with a big parade, a pool party, and dancing, dancing, dancing. Come join in the FUN, we're saving a spot just for you!
