Program Description

The members of the Viol Intensive will work together in three focused daily classes:

  • Morning class with Lisa Terry surveying English consort repertoire from 2 to 6 parts from 1500 to 1640. Music will be sent in advance, and individuals will be called on to coach, with observation and mentoring from Lisa. This is not a performance class, so that we can cover as much of the repertoire as possible, and have time to hone rehearsal skills and self-coaching skills.
  • Afternoon class with Patricia Ann Neely featuring repertoire from North Germany influenced by the British - Repertoire from the dance collections of Brade, Dowland, Simpson, Füllsack and Hildebrandt, and more. How to practice difficult passages. Separating bow technique and left-hand technique in complex passages, utilizing a repetition exercise with complex motives to strengthen focus on difficult fingering or bowing and learning to connect those passages into the greater work to complete the practice in continuity.
  • A second afternoon class with both Lisa and Patricia where we will explore larger concerted works with advanced singers, winds, and keyboard.

The second morning period will be left free so that members of the Viol Intensive may enjoy the English country and Renaissance dance classes that help to make CDSS Early Music Week at Pinewoods unique among summer workshops.

All Viol-Intensive classes will be held in enclosed spaces to minimize the effects of the inevitable humidity of our pond-side setting.

-- Lisa Terry and Patricia Ann Neely, Program Co-Directors

Lisa Terry will be the Viol Maven for Early Music Week this summer. She'll have a supply of nylon strings to sell, a few Sensicore strings to lend, and the expertise to get your pegs turning and your soundposts upright. See the Viol Maven each day during breakfast and lunch to make an appointment before first morning or afternoon class. Please read Viol Survival Tips, and put them in practice BEFORE camp!

The Viol Intensive program is intended for Advanced players interested in working on their ensemble skills. Players should score 40 or above on the VdGSA Self-Rating Guide. If Lisa and/or Pat is not already familiar with your playing, please include the name and contact information of a teacher who has worked with you recently. You may also submit a video or recording to support your application if you feel it would help us to assess your qualification for the program.

This course is limited to 6 participants to ensure plenty of opportunity for active participation. A specific form will be available. Please clearly indicate if you would like to attend Early Music Week, if you did not get a space in the course.

To register, please fill out both the regular form, paying your deposit, and this Special Form for the Viol Intensive.

Scholarship Opportunities

In addition to the scholarships available through CDSS, summer scholarships are offered by Early Music America (deadline: April 15) and The Viola da Gamba Society of America (deadline: April 15).
