Program Description
This is a chance for teachers to attend a week-long folk camp for people of all ages. You will observe and participate while master folklorists teach groups of children traditional dances, songs, crafts, stories and rituals. You will participate in these folk traditions at an adult level yourself and "collect" by audio-recording, interviewing, note taking and experiencing traditional activities. We will meet daily in a Teacher Seminar led by Jane Miller to reflect on your observations and experiences and to share newly-collected activities.
The course, held concurrently with Family Week at Ogontz, is led by Jane Miller, an elementary school teacher for 25 years and the founder and director of Price Farm School in Antrim, N.H. She has a Doctorate in Education and is a core faculty member in the education department at Antioch University New England.
Matriculated Antioch students receive course credit for this course. Graduate credit is also available to others via Antioch University New England Continuing Education. This Course (called "Folk Arts for the Classroom" in the Antioch catalog) is available for one Master's level graduate credit through Antioch University New England Continuing Education. Master's courses require a baccalaureate degree for admission. Application/registration information is available at the Antioch University New England website http://www.antiochne.edu/academics/ce.cfm. Summer course registration begins in mid May and extends to two weeks prior to the course beginning. Antioch tuition of $400 is due to Antioch with the registration form. This is in addition to the fees due CDSS. All who participate fully will be awarded a certificate (40 credit hours) at the end of the course.
Course requirements will be described in the syllabus which will be dispensed at Ogontz. The requirements are:
- Participation in at least three Ogontz Camp Family Week class sessions each day
- Participation in the teacher seminar each day, including sharing of materials and reflection on the process of collecting
- Demonstration of learning by sharing at least one newly learned activity with the camp group or the seminar group
- Development of a "collection" either in a journal, on a CD, audio tape or other format to be submitted to instructor at the week's end
-- Jane Miller, Program Director
