Program Description
This is a workshop for experienced morris dancers that looks at a couple of Cotswold traditions, and identifies and recreates the various dance moves, figures and dances that define them and the team style as expressed through them. You will not just learn the dance, you will learn to dance it as a team focusing on the higher level of interpretation, emphasizing key moves, moments in the dances and interactions with the music -- and what musicians!
We will compare and contrast elements of style and examine how style can be expressed through key moments in the dance, whether in the beauty of showy, flowing and graceful traditions, the strength and swagger of the more robust and grounded traditions, or the snap and spark of more regimented traditions.
The Course, held concurrently with Folk Music Week, is designed and led by John Dexter, Erica Morse and Doug Creighton.
3:15-5:30: We will spend these two hours together working hard identifying distinctive moments of different dance styles and performing them together.
For the rest of the day and evening, the classes of Folk Music Week are available to you. One of these classes will be on playing for morris!
