Andy Davis is a music educator in three Vermont public schools, dance musician, caller, storyteller and singer. Andy plays piano, accordion and banjo. He leads community contra and square dances, performs with Nowell Sing We Clear, and is a member of the New England Dancing Masters - publishers of books and recordings for teachers of traditional dance.

Campers' Week at Pinewoods

Robin Davis

Robin Davis has been participating in community folk music and dance activities much of her life, including healthy doses of Cotswold and Northwest clog morris. A retired professional baker, Robin now teaches preschool. She enjoys gathering children and adults together to DO ART, such as modular origami, Ukranian egg dying, bookbinding, printing and paper collage. She sings with the River Singers, a large multi-cultural choir, and a hospice singing group called Hallowell. She has led children's classes at Pinewoods, Ogontz and Lady of the Lake family weeks.

Lauren Breunig

Lauren Breunig spent summers as a child building fairy houses and dancing the night away at Pinewoods and she is delighted to be attending Ogontz this year for the first time. A singer, dancer, educator and aspiring circus artist, she knows how to keep herself busy. Her passion for world folk music stems from her experiences as a teenager with world music camp Village Harmony, and she continues to sing and perform with a variety of groups. While in college, she spent several summers as a counselor at Circus Smirkus camp, which sparked a love for circus arts and working with children. She is excited to join the Ogontz staff this year!

David Cantieni

David Cantieni has brought innovative spice to contra dancers for more than 20 years with his prowess and musicality on flute, saxophone and bombarde in bands including Swallowtail and Wild Asparagus.

Jeremy Carter-Gordon

Jeremy Carter-Gordon grew up singing and dancing at Pinewoods. He studied Ethnomusicology at Bard College, where he also taught rapper dancing and shape-note singing and called contras. During 2011-12, Jeremy traveled around Europe on a Watson Fellowship, studying different forms of sword dancing (starofswords.wordpress.com). He sings with Renewal, a small world music ensemble, and is known for his powerful bass voice and constant smile. His joyous enthusiasm for singing and dancing is infectious!

Brad Foster

Brad Foster, from Amherst, MA, has been dancing and teaching English country, contras and squares, and morris and sword for over 40 years. He is well known for sharing the joy found in dance, and has taught throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, including at Berea, Pinewoods, Mendocino, John C. Campbell Folk School and Augusta. He is Executive and Artistic Director Emeritus of the Country Dance and Song Society, after 28 years as Director. English Dance Week at Pinewoods

lydia ievins

lydia ievins, from Montague, MA, plays fiddle regularly for English, contra and couple dancing. Her love for creating rich harmonic lines led her into exploring the vibrant traditions of Swedish fiddling; she has thus discovered that the nyckelharpa makes a striking addition to English country dance. As an avid dancer herself, she infuses her playing with rhythmic clarity and sensitive phrasing to produce eminently danceable music.

Jonathan Jensen

Jonathan Jensen is an inspired pianist in musical styles ranging from English country and contra to ragtime and jazz. Jon is a composer of brilliant dance tunes and waltzes, a frequent performer at dance events and a bassist with the Baltimore Symphony. When not playing piano at camp he is often filling in on whistle, recorder, ocarina or mandolin and offering his original songs, both silly and serious.

Jane Miller

Jane Miller, a “teacher's teacher,” founded the Price Farm School in Antrim, NH and is on the faculty of Antioch University New England. Jane has been involved with traditional dance and song for most of her life.

Suzannah Park

Suzannah Park comes from a family of three generations of ballad singers and storytellers and has been performing Appalachian folk music for most of her life. Her interest in the performance and study of traditional music of many kinds has taken her from music-filled kitchens to concert halls across the U.S. and Europe. She is currently singing in the group The Starry Mountain Trio, teaching harmony singing around the country and is in her eleventh year as a guest director for the VT singing organization, Village Harmony. Suzannah is known for her powerful voice and striking harmonies and her ability to inspire others with her love of music. She lives in Asheville, NC with her husband Nathan and their amazing dog Beamer.

Ann Percival

Ann Percival is a pianist, guitarist and singer, erstwhile social worker and artist. Anne’s dancing days started when her Norwegian grandparents took her dancing at the Sons of Norway hall in Brooklyn. At Girl Scout Camp she discovered that she loved singing. She has in recent years found special enjoyment teaching visual arts and crafts. She is a founding member of Wild Asparagus and the O-Tones and is an exceptional dance musician for contras, squares and swing. Her vivacious personality and amazing repertoire of swing, gospel and other songs of many traditions are sure to keep everyone in camp jumpin' and jivin'.

Roger Reed

Roger Reed aka Roger the Jester, is a consummate performer who left an early career with the Swiss theatre troupe Mummenschanz to take to the road, recreating the wandering lifestyle of a medieval fool and leaving a trail of laughter throughout 23 countries.

Family Week at Ogontz

Bruce Rosen

Bruce Rosen has been part of Boston's contra and English country dance community since the mid-1970s as a dancer and musician. His rock solid piano and guitar accompaniment is sought after by many of New England's best contra dance musicians. Bruce also plays piano for English country dancing, appearing frequently in Jamaica Plain (MA), as well as other New England venues. As part of Boston's traditional music scene, he plays guitar at Irish sessions and in performance with the West Newton Ceili Band, and drives the rhythm at Old Time music jams on the banjo ukelele. In the early 90s, Bruce took up the button accordion, and has played for the Pinewoods Morris Men, Ha'Penny Morris, and the Commonwealth Morris Men. Bruce has collaborated on four recordings of New England contra dance music and is seen most years conducting the New England Folk Festival Orchestra.

Sue Rosen

Sue Rosen has been dancing all of her life and attended her first callers workshop at Campers’ Week at Pinewoods in 1989. Since then she's become one of New England's favorite callers and has written contras that have become part of the standard repertoire of dance callers across the country and overseas.

George Wilson

Since the early 1970s George Wilson has delved deeply into various aspects of traditional music -- Leadbelly's powerful 12 string guitar style & songs; Uncle Dave Macon's zany songs and banjo style; and most of all, has become a masterful New England contradance fiddler, heavily influenced by French Canadian and Cape Breton styles.

Rhythm, focus, pattern, muscle memory and deconstruction!! Much more than just throwing things around, this age old skill can have wide effects on learning, social skills and self inflicted fun. In the class we will learn stepping, both traditional and newly created figures and put together dances. The class will use an innovative method of learning rapper through sound and rhythm. We will get our bodies moving and our voices singing as we explore and play. Program Description

One of the best decisions we have made in our family is to pass on to our children the traditions that we love so much in the intergenerational setting of CDSS summer family camps. Here families come together to share the intimate experiences of singing, dancing and being playful together.

Ogontz Camp is the perfect setting for meeting the diverse needs of a family dance community. It offers woodlands and wide open spaces for children to play, a mountain stream for exploring, an outdoor dining deck overlooking the lake and mountains and a big circle of Adirondack chairs for relaxing and taking in this beautiful spot in the foothills of the White Mountains. Delicious home cooked meals and fresh baked breads nurture body and soul, fueling us through an unforgettable week.

We hope you can join us for a joyous celebration of family through the enduring pastimes of traditional music, dance and storytelling. We have pulled together an outstanding staff of some of the finest musicians and dance callers around today. As always, we will be offering contras, squares and English country dance, as well as rapper and swing dance. More dance styles will be taken up in the children's classes.

If you love to sing, this week is for you. We have several singing classes to choose from, plus a staff of strong singers from many singing traditions. There will be a potpourri of art projects throughout the week, and a class where you can practice your circus skills. At the close of the day, before supper, our own camp jester will preside over storytime at the Green Chairs, filling us with with laughter, wonder and awe.
