English & American Dance Week at Pinewoods
Daily Schedule
| 7:45-8:15 | Breakfast |
| 8:15-8:45 | Cold Breakfast Coffee/Tea available |
| 9:00-10:00 |
English (Advanced): Joseph Pimentel / GoldcrestMusic by: Daron Douglas, Paul Oorts, Dave Wiesler For experienced and skilled English dancers, who know the repertoire and figures, learn and remember new sequences efficiently, understand and appreciate the connections to the music, and enjoy the challenges of more complex dances. We will explore easily overlooked opportunities in familiar dances, tease our brains with those you can seldom try at home, and allow beloved favorites to transport us with awesome music and little to no teaching. |
Morris: Justin MorrisonMusic by: Shannon Russell All are welcome to come learn a fun and flowing version of the Sherborne tradition. Beginning dancers will find an accessible introduction to the foundations of Morris, experienced dancers will have the opportunity to delve into the fine points of this lively interpretation of the tradition, and all will enjoy the exuberant delight of Morris. In addition to traditional dances, the class may also learn some non-traditional choreography depending on interest. Wear comfortable athletic shoes. |
|
English For All -- Classics Old & New: Joanna Reiner / CrowfootMusic by: Adam Broome, Jaige Trudel, Nicholas Williams Ease your way into the day with a host of great tunes, classic repertoire dances and new favorites. This class is a great introduction to the joys and variety of English country dancing. |
|
| 10:15-11:15 |
Creative Choreography: David Millstone / NotoriousMusic by: Eden MacAdam-Somer, Larry Unger Working with the relatively small vocabulary of figures in American country dance, choreographers have found creative ways to stretch the traditions. We'll focus on contemporary contras, but we'll also enjoy chestnuts, squares, triplets, with an occasional dance in an odd formation to jolt any jaded brain cells. |
Longsword: Ted HodappMusic by: Shannon Russell We will explore a newly composed longsword dance that has elements of many styles of dancing but emphasizes teamwork, precision movement, and energetic flow. The class will work on many of the figures with an emphasis on bringing this style back to your own team or new group of dancers. No experience required, bring athletic shoes with good traction. |
|
English Folk Songs: Adam BroomeCome join the circle and sing part songs from England. Each class will begin with vocal and breathing exercises to prepare the voice for singing. We will learn material from the time of Shakespeare to the present day. Madrigals, ballads, songs of rural life and perhaps a contemporary rendition from old text to keep the tradition alive. Learn by ear or off the page and sing from the heart! |
|
| 11:25-11:55 |
Camp Gathering: Carol Ormand
Join Carol, your MC, in a daily extravaganza of camper and staff talent, singing, stories and high jinks. A great way to wind down before lunch and hang out with the whole camp! |
| 11:55-12:30 | Swimming, Bookstore Staffed |
| 12:30 | Lunch |
| 1:45-2:45 |
Couple Dancing: Ted Hodapp, Lynn Baumeister / NotoriousMusic by: Eden MacAdam-Somer, Larry Unger Lynn and Ted will lead you through social couple dances you can use in a variety of situations from enhancing your contra-dance waltz experience, to variations on the dance floor. Emphasis will be on lead-follow skills, body mechanics, and interpreting the music. We will feature dances from American, Scandinavian, and French traditions. Bring smooth-soled shoes, and have fun with us – new dances every day with plenty of time to practice. |
Ear Cleaning -- Learning how to listen (for musicians and dancers): Nicholas WilliamsThese are fun excercises that will challenge you to listen closer to the world around you. We'll look at which sounds we hear, which sounds we ignore, and how listening with open ears can improve your singing, playing, and dancing. |
|
Your Turn at the Mic: David Millstone / GoldcrestMusic by: Daron Douglas, Paul Oorts, Dave Wiesler Although the week lists four staff callers, there are many other talented folks available to call a dance. We'll enjoy different voices and different traditions, as campers take turns leading everything from Playford-style English to rip-roarin' squares, barn dances to contemporary contras. With experienced dancers on the floor and music provided by a dynamic trio of musicians who play for all styles, it's a great opportunity to gain calling experience with gentle, private feedback available upon request. |
|
| 3:00-4:00 |
Carol’s Contra Chaos: Carol Ormand / CrowfootMusic by: Adam Broome, Jaige Trudel, Nicholas Williams Hone your dancing skills and entertain the band via a series of dance games and exercises, then enjoy the benefits while dancing a selection of Carol’s favorite contras and squares. |
English Clog: Meg RyanMusic by: Shannon Russell Meg will teach a class in English waltz clog for all levels of experience from beginner to advanced. Steps presented will be both interesting and accessible but will also encompass a range of complexity. Waltz steps are built on repeated phrases of movement and can be simpler or more complicated as desired. If you have English step clogs (wooden soles) please bring them or bring a pair of oxford style shoes with leather or smooth soles. |
|
Playing in an Ensemble: Paul OortsThis class is for musicians who can sight read American and English dance music at moderate tempos, and who want to build their on-the-fly arranging and ensemble playing skills. We will use the music of Julien Clarchies, the leading dance musician in Paris in the days of Napoleon, who left a collection of hundreds of dance tunes for two fiddles. In a process-oriented (rather than a product-oriented) way we'll make these tunes danceable in a variety of instrumental combinations, with each instrument taking (faking?) lead and backup parts. |
|
| 4:00-4:20 | Tea |
| 4:30-5:30 |
Afternoon English Blend: Joanna Reiner / NotoriousMusic by: Eden MacAdam-Somer, Larry Unger Enjoy a mélange of dances with an emphasis on dances and tunes that have been used and interpreted differently through the years, and by different choreographers and different dance communities. |
Rapper: Ted HodappMusic by: Jaige Trudel Ted will lead a rapper sword class open to everyone that emphasizes coordinated movement, stepping, and precision timing to build confident dancers. Prepare for a fun week of varied figures, flips, and stepping patterns to help you build a distinctive style. Wear hard-soled shoes. |

Program Description
Imagine, for a moment, that the Atlantic Ocean had never formed: the British Isles would still be adjacent to North America, and we could enjoy the music and dance traditions of both regions at once. For one glorious week this summer it will be so! English & American Dance Week at Pinewoods brings together many strands of music and dance, weaving them into a gorgeous tapestry for your enjoyment.
From English country dances to contras and squares, from couple dances to English waltz clog, from sword dances to English folk songs, from sunrise to nearly sunrise, expect to be delighted. Come prepared to hone your skills and expand your dancing and musical horizons. We welcome newcomers, old hands and everyone in between to our favorite activities (including chocolate tasting, wellie tossing and late-night shenanigans). Join us for an unforgettable week of music, dance, friendship and joy.
Versatility in Spades
Our staff leads the way in expanding horizons… They dance! They call! They teach! They play! They sing! And they're fun to hang around with, too!
Joseph, Joanna, David and Carol will delight you with a lovely mix of English and American dances. The callers amongst you will have a chance to share your favorite dances, too, during a daily open mic. Justin, Ted and Meg will lead the display dance side of the program with morris, rapper, longsword and English clog classes. Ted and Lynn will also lead delightful couple dances.
The musicians of Goldcrest, Notorious and Crowfoot will conjure glorious melodies, rich harmonies and lively improvisations to send us into dance ecstasy. In addition to dancing to them, you'll have opportunities during the day to join our staff in making music, both instrumental and vocal.
Come Join Us
The staff is just the foundation of this camp; you're the ones who make it happen! The only prerequisite is a willingness to join in the fun. The bottom line: catch up on your sleep before you come to camp! And if you can get your hands on a time-turner….
-- Carol Ormand, Program Director
Joseph Pimentel will lead his English Dance Leaders Course during this week (pre-registration required).
