Look at Special Programs for general information; here are details about this particular program and staff.
This class is for contra callers who want to add squares to their repertoire and will focus on teaching and calling square dances in an effective and confident manner. We will concentrate on traditional Southern, old Western and New England-style square dances, and will build skills in teaching, vocal technique, using breaks ,using patter, phrasing, programming and more. There will be lots of hands-on practice in class and an open mic session for extra calling opportunities. All this with positive critiques and a supportive atmosphere!
This program, held concurrently with American Dance & Music Week, is designed and led by Kathy Anderson. Kathy has been calling squares for many years, and has pleased audiences all over the U.S. and in Europe with her clear teaching and enthusiastic presentation of a great variety of dances. Passing the skills along to keep this tradition alive and well is something she particularly enjoys.
Each day is divided into two parts. The participants of the Callers Course will meet every morning from 9:00 to 11:30 for an intensive workshop with Kathy. Musicians Rebecca McCallum and CW Abbott for the first hour and George Touchstone and Jon Gersh for the second hour, will provide accompaniment and input for the class. These sessions are designed to allow for plenty of opportunity for callers to practice new skills. Each caller will be encouraged to design a personal project/goal to accomplish by week's end.
In the afternoon and evening, participants can choose from among the activities available at American Dance & Music Week.
A sheet of dances to study in advance will be sent to registrants with their acceptance materials.
This course is limited to 12 participants to ensure plenty of opportunity for active participation. If it is oversubscribed on March 16, there will be a lottery, in which case preference will be given to applicants who best fit the criteria: contra callers who want to add squares to their repertoire. Additional preference will be given to applicants from areas that are under-served with square dance callers. Please clearly indicate if you would like to attend American & Music Dance Week if you do not get into this course. Scholarships are available.
